Procedures for Taking Soil Samples
If a soil test is to be a reliable guide for the addition of
fertilizers, lime or other mineral amendments the sample tested must
represent the soil of the area sampled; the laboratory results will
tell you only what is in the sample you send. It is the sample
taker's responsibility to take a truly representative and unbiased
sample of the area in question.
1. Several different tools - such as an auger,
a soil sampling tube, or a spade - may be used in taking soil
samples, as illustrated below.
2. Scrape away surface litter. If an auger or
soil sampling tube is used, obtain a small portion of soil by making
a boring about 7 inches deep if area is to be plowed or rototilled.
If area is a lawn or planting bed that will not be tilled take
samples 4” deep. If a tool such as a spade is used, dig a V shaped
hole to sample depth; then cut a thin slice of soil from one side of
the hole. Use a clean pail or bucket for collecting the samples. It
is important to have equal representation of the top inch, middle
inch, and bottom inch of the soil profile.
3. Because of soil variations, it is necessary
that each sample consist of small portions of soil obtained from at
least 10 locations in area being sampled, as illustrated by the
diagram. After obtaining these portions of soil, mix them together
in the collection pail or bucket for a representative sample.
4. Place 8 ozs (1 cup) of this mixed soil in
new clean zip lock bag. It is important to use a plastic bucket to
collect the samples. Metal or galvanized buckets may contaminate the
sample. The above method of sampling will give a composite average
of the area’s fertility value.
5. After the sample has been taken, the soil
sample bag should be clearly marked with your name, your address,
and the sample name or number. A permanent marker is suggested for
this or it can be on paper stapled to the outside of the zip lock
bag. Keep a record for yourself of the area represented by each
sample.
6. Fill out the soil sample submittal sheet as
completely as possible since this information is very important in
making recommendations. Be sure the sample name or number you have
given it is filled in along with the size of the area. We need this
if you want recommendations. Send the sample and the filled out form
to us. |
